Hi all!
Ok so, I took a portfolio class this summer so that I can put one together for my grad school applications. It was taught by a professional artist named Elizabeth Sayles. You can check out her blog here. She was wonderful. I learned a lot in that class, and because of the class and because of her I now have a clear direction to go into for my portfolio.
The project I worked on the most this summer was a two page comic/manga. It was based on a quote that basically said, "The greatest pleasure in life is doing something others say you can't do." It said something like that. My concept for interpreting the quote was based on the very first thing I decided to be when I grow up: A Cartoon. Keep in mind, I was four years old at the time. I thought a person can truly and physically become a cartoon. Every seen the movie The Phantom Toll Booth? Yeah, that's how I thought cartoons were made. I almost asked my parents to buy me one so I could become a cartoon as well. Hehe. I still want one. If anyone knows where I can get one PLEASE let me know.
Clearly, it's impossible to physically become a cartoon, but the little four year old girl inside me still remains hopeful. That's why this concept is so precious to me. I was going to post the actual story of the manga, but I wanted to see if you guys could understand what was going on in it first. Sometimes the text tells most of the story, but for this one the images do, especially since I decided to omit any dialogue. I'll post the story when the second page is posted though.
Page one will be posted in the next entry!
