I Need Help With My Project!

Okay, I'm having a bit of a dilemma. For my thesis, I have to create an art book, or "The Art of..." book as if it's an art book for an existing production. It would be a book with concept art in it for the project. For those that aren't sure what concept art is, here are some examples (from "Tangled"):

Character Concept
Background Concept

I want to do a fairy tale, but I'm torn between two stories to choose from. One is from Hans Christian Andersen, and one is a story I wrote. I spoke to the head of the animation department, and she had doubts about both. She told me that no matter what, the story I decide to work on should be one that a production company would be willing to spend their money on. She felt my stories needed more content to make it more exiting. I think she's right, but I have no idea what to do. Here's a synopsis of each story:

"Little Ida's Flowers" by Hans Chrisitan Andersen

Little Ida’s flowers were quite withered, and a student said that the flowers had been at a ball the night before. He tells her that the flowers have capital balls at the large castle where the king lives in the summer, and they are jumping about quite merrily almost every night. He also tells her that the flowers can fly, and the butterflies are flowers which have flown off their stalks into the air. Little Ida thinks all this is funny, she is very fond of the student, but a lawyer who’s come to pay a visit, thinks he’s telling her a lot of nonsense.

Then Ida took the doll Sophie out of her bed and put the flowers in it, since they were sick. The doll had to lay in the drawer. When Ida went to bed, she fell asleep and dreamt about the flowers, the students and the lawyer. Then she awoke and glanced at the door of the room where the flowers were. She thought the flowers were dancing inside, so she crept out of her bed, went to the door, and looked inside the room. The flowers were really having a ball inside; they were dancing and having fun. The next day, the flowers were dead, so Ida placed them in a little paper box. Her two cousins and she buried the dead flowers in the garden, so they could grow up again the following summer.

"The Dream Feather" by Delilah Espinosa (The title is tentative)

A girl named Lilliai was told of an unfinished fairytale when she was growing up, about a prince named Cadmus who was placed in an eternal sleep in order to find his soul mate (who didn’t exist yet). The one meant for him would be born with a symbol marked on her body that matched his, just like everyone else when they find their soul mate in Lilliai’s kingdom. Sad that she was still alone, she comes across a feather with a rainbow of colors and makes a wish on it, recalling something her mother used to say:

“Make a wish upon a feather,
And it will come true,
But only of that feather,
Comes back to you.”

She makes a wish to meet the man of her dreams. The feather wises above her and bursts into a million stardust sparkles that make her instantly fall asleep. In her dream, she literally meets the man of her dreams and finds that not only is he real, but that he is also Prince Cadmus from the unfinished fairytale.

She makes the same wish on the feather every night to be with him, but decides that she wants meet him in person. “You must make the right wish,” he says to her. She tries several times and eventually succeeds, but when she meets him, he is still deep in his eternal sleep, and kept in a glass capsule she cannot open. Finally, she realizes what she must do and wishes on the feather to see him in her dream once more.

In the dream world, she runs to Prince Cadmus and tells him of her idea. “Dreams, like fairytales, always end with true love’s kiss.” She kisses him, they awaken from their slumber, and live happily ever after.

What do you guys think? Is there one story you like over the other? Do you think it needs something? If it does, what do you think it is? I could really use all the help I can get with this one.

  1. Hi there! Please excuse my poor english I try my best!

Personally I preffer the second one,The dream feather is quite more interesting and personal.

That story needs some excitement and troubles in the plot running, of course, to make it a little more compact and strong plot.

    some ideas:

    a)Unfinished tale:

The characters are part of a unfinished tale, maybe the writer of this faery tale died in real world and the story remains unfinished, so this cause the magic sleep of the prince, until Lilliai create her own finish for the tale.

    b) Evil characters:

Every love story have a villain or various troubles, maybe yo must create another character/group, that is searching the feather to make the story finish in a diferent way, maybe this character is a wizard a witch, a man falled in love with Lilliai, an individual searching for power, inmortality or similar things, And he needs the feather for his plans.

    c)Countdown:

Maybe there is a limit time to finish the history, a year, months, three days... until something bad happens...the story remains unfinished forever, been destroyed in real world, etc...

    d) is not too easy:

Dreamworld where rest the prince is a dangerous place, not only beutiful an oniric dreams remains there, nightamares and scary ones too, the way to found Lillai´s love must be a little harder, some obstacles in the path, some allies in the search on this dreamworld, until he finally reunites with Cadmus.

I hope this help you, gook luck and keep triying!
